bobby’s brings back memories

When my brother and I were much, much younger, our parents would ship us out to my grandparent’s house in Glen Carbon, Illinois to spend the night (or 2) with Grandma + Grandpa while they had a night on the town.  (I am totally going to be doing this once our baby girl arrives.)  My brother + I would make forts with my grandma’s handmade afghans, get to eat Fruity Pebbles for breakfast, and go to Catholic church (we are born + raised Lutherans).  I absolutely LOVED spending the night at their house and waking up to their Grandfather Clock early in the morning. On special occasions, Grandma + Grandpa would take us out for ice cream.  But, not just any ice cream – frozen custard!  Yes, that’s right… I was raised on this stuff early and I have not only my parents, but my grandparents to thank!  My grandpa absolutely LOVED Bobby’s Frozen Custard, so it was a special treat for us when they would take us to get some frozen custard.100_4703I’m sad to say that I can’t even remember the last time I have been to Bobby’s.  Although Glen Carbon isn’t too far from where we live now (it’s just across the river from St. Louis), we just never took the time to swing by there after visits to Grandma + Grandpa’s house.  However, we were able to spend A LOT of time in Glen Carbon this weekend with a visitation on Friday, funeral on Saturday, and my cousin’s graduation/going away party on Sunday.  With both my grandparents gone now, I’m just not sure we’re going to have that opportunity to be in Glen Carbon again – or at least, not as often.  So, I made it a point to stop by Bobby’s this weekend.100_4704As we pulled up to custard stand, memories flooded my mind.  I had actually never been to Bobby’s during the day, but it hasn’t changed a bit.  Matt even commented if it had been a Fritz’s or Andy’s before.  Nope, it’s always been Bobby’s and it’s always looked like that.100_4702Although they are also “the home of the turtle”, I took a pass on the turtle and went for a concrete I can’t get at either Fritz’s or Andy’s – the Crunch.  Vanilla frozen custard mixed with chocolate hard shell and Rice Krispies.  Matt went for the Mint Chip concrete, which I think is pretty self-explanatory.100_4700I wasn’t too impressed with their frozen custard – very similar to Fritz’s – but I loved my concrete!  The hard shell chocolate, which is not my favorite, was great and the Rice Krispies gave it the perfect amount of texture.  And, for once, I think mine was much better than Matt’s!  And let me tell you, I can tell my little girl is getting addicted to this stuff too – she started kicking like crazy when I started eating it!100_4701I’m not sure if I’ll ever have the chance to go back to Bobby’s again (I know, I know… it’s much closer than Andy’s!), but it was nice to have the opportunity to reminisce on my childhood and the time spent with my grandparents.
