DAY IN THE LIFE OF A WORK AT HOME MOM
ARE YOU READY TO MAKE this THE YEAR WHERE YOU GET MORE DONE, ACHIEVE YOUR GOALS, AND STILL HAVE TIME FOR YOUR FAMILY? LET ME HELP YOU GET YOUR TIME BACK WITH MY FREE PRODUCTIVITY PLANNER!
This is one of my most requested blog posts, and I realized I have not done a day-in-the-life in over a year at this point. The last time I walked you through what a typical day looks like for me is right at the start of the pandemic, when we were trying to navigate both working from home and online schooling for the first time ever.
As things are starting to get back to normal - and I’ve officially had a full school year with BOTH kids in school fulltime (except for those 3 weeks when we were quarantined) - I thought I would share what a typical day looks like for me.
And if you want to see how I balance working from home + being a mom during the summertime when my ENTIRE family is home (it’s a blessing + a curse being married to a teacher), let me know! I have a lot of my blog posts mapped out for the summer, but I would LOVE to slip that one in there sometime if you want!
TUESDAY MORNING
My alarm goes off promptly at 5AM every single day. I rarely hit snooze since I want to make sure I have plenty of time in the morning to workout, get ready for the day, and get the kids ready + off to school.
I would love to say I don’t look at my phone in bed, but lately, instead of immediately getting out of bed, I’ve been reading my Gospel chapter of the day in bed before getting up. I try REALLY hard not to check messages and things until after my workout is done, but that doesn’t always happen.
After I get done reading my Bible chapter, I get dressed, fill up my water bottle, and head downstairs to do a strength training workout. Tuesdays are my full body HIIT day on the Sweat App (I am currently doing the High Intensity Strength 2.0 program), which takes about 45 minutes to do. Once I’m done, I head outside for a 20 minute HIIT or interval run with the Peloton app.
By 6:30, I’m done working out and quickly put up a few stories on my personal Instagram and at least one on The Biz Runners Instagram as well. (Tuesdays are my day to post our stories for The Biz Runners.)
I head inside and get ready for the day, which includes showering, makeup, and hair. I pretty much never wash my hair on Tuesday, so it’s either curling it if it still feels clean or throwing my favorite hat on + calling it a day.
By this point, it’s right around 8AM (yeah, I know… I’m high maintenance) and I’m making sure the kids have eaten their breakfast and start getting their backpacks packed with lunches + water bottles so we’re ready to go. MacKenna usually gets dressed on her own, but Miles still needs a little help (especially with shoes), so I help him get ready, do his hair, and make sure both kids have brushed their teeth.
Right before we leave, I make my smoothie (½ a banana, chia seeds, spinach, chocolate protein powder, PB2, milk + ice) to drink in the car while we are in line for school drop off. Taking the kids to school is one of my favorite parts of the day, even if they tend to argue in the car most mornings. I enjoy the extra time with them (+ the fact that I haven’t had to stand outside at the bus stop in the cold at all this year).
TUESDAY MID-MORNING THROUGH EARLY AFTERNOON
By 9AM, I’m home from dropping the kids off + sit down at my desk to start work for the day. My day always starts with my daily business tasks, which include writing something I’m grateful for, checking my email + messages, checking my business numbers + ads data for clients, and getting some content written for the day so I’m not waiting until the last minute to do it in the afternoon.
Tuesdays are also “call days” for The Biz Runners. We try to schedule calls ONLY on Tuesdays and Thursday so that we have plenty of time to get other work done during the week. On this particular Tuesday, I have 2 calls…
10AM Coworking session for the members of Content Made Easy
11AM Checking in with one of the girls in my downline for some accountability
I’m done with all my calls by 11:30, so it’s time to get some work done! I “batch” a lot of my days by what I do, and since Tuesdays are typically with clients, I make Tuesdays my “client work” day. I work on editing + scheduling a couple of blog posts for a few clients, as well as some emails for clients as well. I also edited a Reel that Kelli + I filmed a few weeks ago to post over on The Biz Runners.
At this point, it’s already 1PM and time to eat lunch!
TUESDAY AFTERNOON
Most days, I try to be done working by 1PM so I can take some time to eat lunch and pick up around the house before having to go get the kiddos from school.
I make a salad and some yogurt with trail mix and sit down at the table to read my current book (right now, I’m reading Stamped, which deserves a FULL review of it’s own). I eat + read for 20-30 minutes and then clean up dishes from lunch and empty/load the dishwasher if I need to.
Just like I batch my work each day, I also batch my cleaning each day. Tuesdays are bedroom cleaning days, which happen to be one of my favorites. Mostly because I love fresh sheets + a made bed, but also because I can vacuum all 3 bedrooms with our cordless vacuum without the battery running out on me! It’s the little things…
I change the sheets on the kids’ beds, pickup around their rooms, and vacuum all 3 rooms, which takes about 30 minutes. All while listening to one of my favorite podcasts, of course.
Once I’m done with that, I usually have about an hour until I go for a walk and pick up the kids, so I try to get ahead on a little bit of work if I can, or I’ll work on something for MY business that I’ve been putting off. Today, I recorded a Reel for my personal Instagram, which always takes longer than I’d like to admit. But, Tuesdays are usually easier for Reels since I almost ALWAYS repurpose the blog post that was posted.
I’m done by 3PM and head outside to do a lap around the neighborhood. This is my 2nd favorite part of the day because it’s the only time I ever get to completely unplug + decompress before picking the kids up. I’m a busy body, and as much as I hate to admit it, silence + stillness are HARD for me. So, I try to go for a 15 minute walk every afternoon, just to clear my head and get my mind off work for the day. It’s like my commute, except I’m actually moving my body instead of sitting in the car.
I leave at 3:30 to go wait in line to pickup the kids from school. While I’m sitting there, I usually engage with people on Instagram. I comment on posts in my feed, like some posts from hashtags I use and follow, and try to find some new people to follow. All this helps me increase my reach + grow not just my Instagram, but my business as well!
The kids finally hop into the car around 4:05 and we get to talk about how their day was and pray for zero arguing in the 5 minute drive back home.
MacKenna has swimming lessons at 4:30, so we drop Miles off with Daddy at home, get MacKenna into her swimsuit and grab a snack, and hop back in the car to get to swimming lessons on time. She has a different coach today and works on backstroke, which is SO hard, but I’m constantly impressed with how much she learns while she’s there. She’s become quite the fish!
TUESDAY EVENING
If you don’t know by now, I rarely make dinner. Matt is just a much better cook than I am and I just HATE cooking. It’s just too frustrating to me, so once we’re home, I take over kid duties so he can cook dinner. It’s Tuesday, so of course it’s Taco Tuesday for us! Matt makes delicious fried tilapia tacos in the air fryer.
It’s bath night for Miles, so Matt gets him in the tub while I clean up from dinner (yup, I’d rather do the dishes than the actual cooking) and make lunches for the kiddos for the next day. It’s one less thing I’ll have to do in the morning, even though it takes less than 5 minutes to do it.
We watch some TV as a family and at 7PM, we let the kids play on the iPads or Nintendo, while we battle it out in Tetris on the Switch.
Our bedtime routine starts promptly (most nights) at 7:30, which means PJs, brushing teeth, reading, prayers + songs, and lights out by 8PM (for Miles - Kenna gets to stay up a little later reading for school).
I grab a load of laundry (I do a little bit every day) to throw in the wash and unload the dryer to fold while I watch my current show (just finished season 1 of Big Sky - SO GOOD). My show + laundry is my 3rd favorite part of the day because it’s my “me time”. Once I’m done folding laundry, I get some dessert + a sparkling water and lay down in bed and watch TV until it’s time to get ready for bed.
My bedtime routine starts at 10PM with washing the day off my face, brushing teeth, and then getting in bed to read my PM devotional. I stay up a little later chatting with Matt + watching TV before I can’t keep my eyes open anymore.
And by 11PM, I’m sound asleep.
That’s what a typical Tuesday looks like. And at 5AM the next day, it’s much of the same thing, just some different tasks + activities to get done. And next week starts a WHOLE NEW RHYTHM of daily life with school being out for the summer! It’s not always easy to be a WAHM and have kids home for the summer, but you can definitely make it work!
