my pregnancy secret

In addition to posting food, frozen custard, and fitness things, I also wanted to start writing a bit about my pregnancy.  It has changed so many things in my life in just the first trimester along that it is pretty hard to ignore when it comes to blogging, especially since it has changed many aspects of my eating + exercise habits.

But, there is a lot to talk about since I am already 13 weeks into my pregnancy.  I will probably get more in depth about the changes in my food + fitness next week, since those are 2 lengthy posts in themselves.  So, I really just wanted to give you the scoop on the first 3 months of my pregnancy.

We’ve been talking about when the “right time” is to have a baby.  My parents have been telling me ever since Matt + I got married that if you’re waiting until you can afford one, you’ll never have a baby.  Our talk really started this past summer.  We knew we wanted to start a family soon, but not having 2 incomes (I was still without a job as of this past August) and living on 1 teacher’s salary, it just wasn’t going to work.  So, once I was offered my current position, the baby talk really started happening.

We officially decided to start trying at the beginning of November, and by January, I was pregnant (although I didn’t know it yet).  I feel so very blessed that this happened so quickly for us, because I know it is much more difficult for most people.  In all honesty, I really didn’t think I would get pregnant so quickly, so again, I feel so very blessed and am so thankful that there were no issues for either of us.

I actually “knew” I was pregnant before even taking a test.  At the time, I was training pretty vigorously for the GO! St. Louis Half Marathon and knew what times I needed to be hitting in my workouts.  All of a sudden, my times were almost a minute slower than they should’ve been.  I felt like I was working just as hard on my hard runs, but my results were showing otherwise.  I knew something was up since there was just no explanation to my slower times.

When February rolled around and a certain someone didn’t show, I was sure about it.  One Saturday morning, I woke up, took a pregnancy test, and sure enough.  I was pregnant!  I have to admit, besides my wedding day, that was probably one of the best days of my life – soon to be taken over by the birth of our little bug.

We waited 3 weeks before telling anyone besides my doctor.  We wanted to wait until our first appointment to make sure everything was OK.  What an amazing experience to see our little baby and the little heartbeat!  It is still incredible to me that there is something LIVING in me!

Even after the first doctor’s visit, we kept everything pretty hush-hush.  We were still only 8 weeks along and weren’t quite in the clear yet.  As much as I really wanted to tell everyone right away, I also didn’t want to have the heartbreak of telling everyone something was wrong.  So, we decided to keep it a secret until we had our second appointment at 11/12 weeks.

I got the scare of my life when she couldn’t find the heartbeat.  I had broken down to Matt the week before telling him that was my biggest fear, that I had miscarried and didn’t know.  So, when she poked and prodded and couldn’t find anything, my heart sunk.  But, she reassured me that everything was fine, that I was still early and the baby was tucked really far down into my pelvis.  After a quick ultrasound, there was are baby bug, heart beating and all.

Again, thank you so much for all the congratulations!  We are so very excited and so far I have loved being pregnant, even if this is only the first week of everyone actually knowing I am pregnant!  I plan on talking more about running during pregnancy (which yes, I still am running) and about how my food intake has changed since these also (sort of) effect the content on my blog.  I’m sure some of you are interested in those sort of details!  Plus, I have friends + family out of town who I think would like to be kept up to date on this sort of thing!
