SETTING GOALS FOR 2023
ARE YOU READY TO MAKE 2023 THE YEAR WHERE YOU GET MORE DONE, ACHIEVE YOUR GOALS, AND STILL HAVE TIME FOR YOUR FAMILY? LET ME HELP YOU GET YOUR TIME BACK WITH MY FREE PRODUCTIVITY PLANNER!
I feel like it’s been awhile since I shared more of a “personal” blog post. Typically, my blog posts are educational, helping you with your mindset, your goals, and - of course - your time + productivity.
But, since we’re at the start of the new year, I thought instead that I would do more of a “hybrid” post, not only educating you on how I personally set my goals, but also sharing my goals with you. Of course, this also gives me some accountability by sharing my goals with you, but I’m also super nosy and love seeing what other people’s goals are for the new year!
HOW I SET MY 2023 GOALS
I talked about this a little in the past, but the way I set my goals is a little different than how many people do it.
I think SMART goals are GREAT! I think they’re important because they cover all the basis on what it takes to achieve a goal.
BUT…
SMART goals are missing one critical aspect.
YOUR THOUGHTS.
With my coaching clients, we go through a process called the T.E.A.R. process. The basis of the T.E.A.R. process is that in order for you to get the R (results) you want, you have to change your T (thoughts) first.
So, like most ways you set goals, I start with the R - the results I want - first. After I determine the results I am trying to achieve, I break it down into A - the actions it will take to get there.
Lastly, I pick 1 or 2 thoughts that I need to think in order for that result + action to happen. I’ll be honest, I’m not great about the E part - your emotions - because I hate feeling my feelings, but I DO think that understanding how you want to FEEL with your thoughts + results in important as well. So, take some time to think about how you want to feel as well. (And maybe I’ll actually think about how I want to feel too… blech…)
WHAT THIS LOOKS LIKE
One of my goals this year is to get healthy, which is NOT a great goal. It’s not even CLOSE to a SMART goal. But, I’ve struggled with figuring out the R of this. Part of it is I’ve been battling injuries on + off for several years now - and it all really came to a head right around my 38th birthday in October.
Maybe it’s because I’m getting closer to 40… or maybe it’s because I’ve been ignoring the things I KNOW I need to do in order to keep my body healthy so I can continue running for the second half of my life.
So, really… the result I want is to run 5 to 6 miles without aches and pains. I don’t need to go farther than that - and I don’t care how fast I run at this point in my life. I just want to be able to run PAIN FREE.
So, what ACTIONS do I need to take in order to achieve that result?
Spend more time stretching - have a routine I follow that I do DAILY.
Control the inflammation in my body - I’m still working on figuring this out, but I think stretching more will help.
Take more rest days - at least 1x per month where I do NOTHING (not even active rest).
Listen to my body more - stretch, ice, rest, etc.
How do I need to feel in order to take action + achieve those results?
I need to feel trust between my mind + body (I don’t know a specific emotion for this, but I need to trust that time off is better than pushing through)
Excited that I GET to workout several times a week
(I told you… I’m not great at this emotion part… your girl doesn’t like to feel her feelings.)
And last, but certainly not least, what THOUGHTS do I need to have in order to achieve these results?
I listen to my body and give it the rest it DESERVES.
I trust that my body will tell me what it needs.
I know while I might not like stretching, it will help me continue to run throughout my life.
I am a pain-free, injury free runner!
That last thought I’m not quite there yet, so I need to change it to fit how I really think + feel now. Instead, I can say, “I am working toward being a pain-free, injury free runner.”
Now, instead of writing down my goal (well, I DO write them down, but…), I write down my THOUGHT instead. Because if that thought doesn’t change FIRST, my results won’t change.
So, below, instead of seeing all my GOALS for 2023, you’re going to see my THOUGHTS. Which, honestly, is pretty scary to share, but I again, it’s going to keep me accountable to achieving the results I want!
MY 2023 GOALS
PERSONAL: I am fulfilled with my work + my relationships.
BUSINESS: I am a business owner who is able to earn $5K per month. I am bringing in new clients regularly into my coaching + consulting businesses.
SPIRITUAL: I am learning how to hear the Lord in my daily life.
HEALTH: I listen to my body + give it what it needs (rest, balance, nutrition, etc.).
RELATIONSHIPS: I continue to keep my family as my #1 priority. I am willing to have uncomfortable conversations with the people I love most.
Oh, and I forgot to mention… I don’t really like having a word of the year, but as I was setting my goals, one word ended up really sticking out to me…
BUILD
So, 2023 is all about BUILDING - my body, my business, my relationships, my faith, etc. I LOVE it and am SO excited to put it into practice throughout 2023!
