not as planned

Thursday did not exactly go as I had planned.  And it all started very, very early…

Planned:  A good decent night’s sleep (good sleep is a rarity at 27 weeks pregnant).

What really happened:  Waking up in the middle of the night to relieve my bladder isn’t a new thing, but it does disturb my sleep.  Follow it up by a massive calf cramp a few hours later and sleep became the least of my worries.  This is the second time this week (and throughout my pregnancy) I have woken up with a calf cramp.  I get them when I stretch my legs out completely while lying on my left side.  I haven’t quite figured out how to relieve them quickly, but sitting straight up, grabbing my calf, and wincing in pain while trying not to wake up the Hubs isn’t working.

Planned:  A 20 minute run at varying speeds.  It was supposed to look like this:

  • 2 minute warm-up @ 4.0 mph
  • 1 minute run @ 5.0 mph
  • 1 minute run @ 5.3 mph
  • 1 min run @ 5.6 mph
  • 1 min run @ 5.9 mph
  • Repeat 3x
  • 2 minute cool down @ 4.0 mph

What really happened:  I made it through 2 of those circuits (about 12 minutes) when I had some uncomfortable lower abdominal pressure.  It was almost like a burning sensation, like I had waited to long to pee or something.  It wasn’t a terrible pain, but was noticeable enough to make me stop and walk.  I walked for the remaining 8 minutes at a comfortable pace and luckily it disappeared by the time I was done.

This is the first time I’ve had to stop in the middle of a workout.  But, I’m happy I did – better safe than sorry, especially when I’m trying to grow a baby in there!  I’m not sure if this is my sign to stop running, but I am definitely going to be even more cautious now than I already am.

Planned:  Our 28 week check up with the OB.

What really happened:  I received a phone call at 10 AM saying that my doctor was going to have to go deliver a baby in the afternoon, the time of my appointment.  So, we moved the appointment up to 11:30, meaning I needed to drink that lovely orange glucose a bit earlier than planned.

Planned:  Drink my glucose drink at 10:30, leave work at 11 to go get Matt and get to our appointment by 11:30.

What really happened:  My phone rang at 10:35, right after I had gone to get my “yummy” orange drink out of the refrigerator, saying that labor wasn’t going well and that my doctor needed leave to get to the hospital.  So, instead of getting all my questions answered about all the aches and pains I’ve been having this week, I had to reschedule for first thing this morning.  Boo.  But, I am happy that she called right before I was planning on drinking that c-rap.

Planned:  Using our Living Social deal for Jennifer’s Pharmacy and Soda Shoppe that expires next week.  They close at 5:30 during the week and since I would be off work early because of our doctor’s appointment, it was the perfect day to use it up.

What really happened:  Well, since my doctor’s appointment got moved to this morning and I didn’t get off work until 4:30, we obviously didn’t get the chance to go to Jennifer’s.  I was really looking forward to a good old fashioned fountain soda too.  This was our second attempt to go, after we figured out that the close really early.  We will attempt again this weekend.

*********

As a perfectionist, it’s hard when everything doesn’t go exactly as planned, especially when things start to begin to spiral out of control, like I felt like they did yesterday.  At one point, I was on the verge of tears, as I really wanted my questions answered by the doctor and didn’t feel they were scary enough to validate a phone call to her office.

However, even when everything doesn’t go as planned, I try to find the good at of the situation.  I made a few extra bucks since I was able to stay at work the full 8 hours, and I also got to sleep in a bit this morning.  Plus, since I didn’t have to skip my lunch break so I could leave work early, I was able to go out at lunch and visit my grandma with my mom.

Hopefully, today will go a little more smoothly than yesterday!  We wouldn’t kick the weekend off with a bad start now, would we?
